THE BOOK LOVERS

  • A love story for bibliophiles, full of original ideas and likeable characters, told with charm and humour.
  • Her previous titles Kranichland, Kastanienjahre and Die Erfindung der Sprache sold over 120,000 copies altogether.
  • Rights to Kranichland were sold to France (Les Escales) and the Netherlands (Stortebeeker).

A novel for book lovers, history lovers and anyone who believes books can mend a broken heart.

Gesa Grambek hasn’t read a novel for twenty years. Since her fiancé Onni, a Finnish writer, was killed in an accident, books hold nothing but tragic memories for her. She works for an insurance company in Lübeck, where she is head of the department that insures valuable books against damage by the elements. Now, at nearly sixty years of age, Gesa is at risk of being laid off, since there are fewer and fewer people with an interest in literature. When Gesa meets the mysterious bookseller Ole Oevermann, it seems her luck has turned. His little bookshop by the River Trave is also losing customers. Gesa and Ole decide to join forces and turn the residents of Lübeck into book lovers again. Not only does Gesa find Ole extraordinarily charming – she also gradually starts to allow books back into her life. All the signs point to a new beginning. But then history threatens to repeat itself.
