LIGHTS OUT! WHY LIGHT POLLUTION IS WORSE THAN YOU THINK

According to ecologists, the fine balance between night and day is under severe strain. Light pollution isn’t just a problem in the cities, having long since reached rural areas. Blackbirds sing in the dead of night while freshly hatched turtles get lost on their way to the ocean. But humans are affected, too: too much nocturnal light has been linked to almost every illness typical of urban civilisations such as insomnia, obesity, depression and even cancer. Dr Annette Krop-Benesch’s new book is a call to action that shows why we need to rethink how we use light during night-time.
