Ottilie von Faber’s father dies suddenly in 1893, leaving her as the sole heir to AW Faber pencil factory at the young age of sixteen. She is very young, very beautiful and very wealthy. One of the men vying for her hand is Count Alexander zu Castell-Rüdenhausen, and the attractive young couple soon find themselves at the center of society events. They have five children together, and the young mother throws herself into the education of her offspring. But Ottilie wants to get out of the nursery rooms and take over her grandfather’s legacy. Alexander will hear nothing of it. Ottilie finds herself turning ever more to her husband’s friend, Philipp von Brand. When Ottilie finally leaves her husband to pursue a future with von Brand, Alexanders is overwhelmed by hatred and contempt. Ottilie von Faber-Castell is judged the guilty party in the 1918 divorce, and loses all societal status. The fictionalized biography tells the story of a great dynasty and a remarkable woman.
