Dezső Kosztolányi (1885–1936) gilt als großer Erneuerer der ungarischen Literatur im 20. Jahrhundert. In allen Gattungen bewandert, schuf er bedeutende Lyrik, Romane, Novellen und Essays. Neben Shakespeare und Oscar Wilde hat er auch Heine, Hölderlin und Rilke ins Ungarische übersetzt. Seine beiden Meisterwerke unter den Romanen – «Nero» (1922) und «Ein Held seiner Zeit» (1933) – zählen zur Weltliteratur und haben bis heute nichts an Frische und Originalität eingebüßt.
