THE VOLCANO - A NOVEL SET AMONG EMIGRANTS

Klaus Mann’s novel ‘The Volcano’, first published in 1939, is one of his most important works. It is a literary chronicle of anti-fascist emigration, a unique panorama of destinies in exile. Director Ottokar Runze has made a film of the novel, to be released in October 1999. In honour of this film version a new edition of the novel will be published based on Mann’s original manuscript, and will include numerous film stills. Uwe Naumann’s afterword provides an in-depth look at the background behind Klaus Mann’s novel and how it came to be written.

Klaus Mann

Klaus Mann was born in Munich in 1906, the first child of Thomas and Katia Mann. He began his literary career as the enfant terrible of the Weimar Republic. After 1933 he became an important figure in the German literary elite that had been forced into exile by the Nazis. Klaus Mann’s death in 1949 in Cannes was caused by an overdose of sleeping pills.
